Bialetti 06857 Review

Bialetti 06857 Review by niki

This pot is unbeatable for its ease of use and simplicity in design for making a great shot of espresso. I use four of these throughout the day, so I always have the choice to make upto 4 6oz shots at a time. Bustello, Alessi, Lily taste wonderful.

Bialetti 06857 Review by Kristin Kloc "K.Kloc" (Los Angeles)

OK, so it doesn't make actual espresso shots that you'd pull from a machine. In strength, it's about a step down. However, it's awfully close and I think it's a sweeter and much more pleasant cup. I go between french press coffee and this so it's a nice medium.

I bought the 1-cup since I'm the only person in my home who drinks coffee. I've read elsewhere that the smaller sizes (1 and 3 cup) actually do a better job than the larger sizes. I think it might have something to do with how long it takes to heat up, since a smaller size is going to boil water faster. I have no experience with this.

The directions say to put cool water in the pot, but I've also read that using already hot water is better, otherwise the coffee will "cook" and will produce a bitter and burnt tasting coffee. I've done it both ways and I think you get a better result using hot water. I have an electric kettle so this isn't a big issue, but it might lengthen your morning routine. The jury is also out on how you wash this thing. Some people don't use any soap because the pot is seasoned much like a cast iron skillet. Others say it's important to get that layer of oil off or it will go rancid. I have several seasoned cast iron pots and pans and haven't had a problem, however I'll update if my coffee starts to taste like garbage! Whatever you do, do NOT put it in the dishwasher. Wash with mild dish soap, rinse, and let air dry.

Be sure to use a grind that's between a espresso grind and a cone filter grind. I did my first shots with some Allegro coffee from Whole Foods and just set the grind between the two settings and it worked perfectly (ie: no sludge).

I thought it was going to take some mastering to get this right but so far I've had great coffee from this little contraption. For me, it was much harder to master an espresso machine. Be sure the handle isn't over the heat otherwise it will melt! I had to get a cast iron diffuser for my gas stove since my burner settings range from "high" to "set the house on fire" and the one cup is so tiny that it needed something to sit on.

Considering the price, it's worth a try.

Bialetti 06857 Review by virichip

My wife is a mocha fiend and likes the hot version from McDonalds but our outlet is not conveniently located. So after reading all reviews I purchased this little guy along with a HIC Brands that Cook Stainless Steel Milk Frother, 14-Ounce Size, as a Xmas gift. She is thrilled with it. Break in the Maker by running some coffee thru it and discard. After it cools rinse all parts in just water (hint: do this after each use, don't use dish detergent. Also if you don't want to wait for it to cool just run under cold water). To make McDonalds-type hot mocha fill bottom container up to vent hole with water (perferably filtered) and attach to Maker. Put two scoops of your favorite coffee in strainer and place in top section. Place on stove on moderate heat so as not to damage handle. Item works like a percolater. Heat 1/2 cup of milk (don't use low fat or skim) in microwave for 60 seconds and stir in 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup. Place mixture in frother and pump quickly until you get a frothy mix. When Maker stops percolating pour coffee into mug and add frothed milk. Stir. Finish off with whipped cream topping and cross of syrup on top of that. Enjoy.

Bialetti 06857:: About this product

Adding eclectic character to the kitchen stovetop, this polished-aluminum coffee pot features a unique octagon shape that was first designed in Italy in 1933. The unit makes one 2-ounce espresso cup of coffee in just four to five minutes and is extremely simple to use. Just fill the lower chamber with water and the top filter with fine-ground coffee. Then place the pot on the stove and heat until the water boils. Through a pressurizing process, espresso moves to the upper chamber of the pot, ready to be served. Other highlights include a flip-up top with an easy-grip knob, a stay-cool black plastic handle, and a side-pour spout. When finished using the unit, wash it by hand with warm soapy water and rinse clean. Made in Italy. Aluminum, stovetop espresso maker produces 1 demitassse cup of rich, authentic Italian espresso in just 4-5 minutes.
